How storms are named

6/28/2018 (Permalink)

Katrina.  Harvey.  Sandy. Andrew.  These aren't just any names - these are some of the most costly and deadly storms in our recent history.  But just how do storms get their names?  Read along to find out!

Prior to 1950, storms were not formally named.  In 1950, storms began being named for men.  In 1953, meteorologists switched to women's names, and in 1979, included both.  Today, the naming of storms is controlled by the World Meteorological Organization.  For Atlantic storms, the names go on a six year rotation.  Names are retired if the storm is particularly destructive. Here's a list of retired storm names.
