Mold growth on the wall

Microbial growth in your home is nothing fun to deal with. You may have had a simple toilet/shower leak, even a tub or small dishwasher leak and thought you cleaned all the water up quickly. Without a professional to check the moisture levels in walls, flooring, and cabinetry etc. you may have missed moisture. SERVPRO of Huntington can help with these psychometric readings. Conditions like these can create a feeding ground for microbial growth or mold. You may not see it visible at first, but notice an odd odor. By the time you notice the growth, many things may no longer be able to be restored, but must be replaced. Causing more headache and more money! It takes as little as 48 hours for mold spores to begin to grow.

How mold grows

7/5/2018 (Permalink)

Summer is a prime opportunity for mold to grow in your home.  Mold needs three things to grow:

  • nutrients
  • moisture
  • time

This is why it is imperative to get help from SERVPRO of Huntington if you have water damage, as untreated water stains on walls can result in mold.

Mold spore spread via air.  This is why, if you attempt to clean mold by yourself, it can spread the mold to other areas instead of eliminating it.  Better leave it to the professionals at SERVPRO of Huntington!  We have the staff, equipment, and expertise to fix your mold problems!

Mold after water damage

SERVPRO of Huntington handles emergency situations involving water damage.  We understand that where there is standing water, there may be mold.  The longer the moisture has been in an area, the greater the chance for mold.

If you have sustained water damage to your home or business, keep your eyes (and nose) out for signs of mold.  In addition to visible mold spots, you may smell a musty odor. Also be aware that past moisture problems can indicate current mold.

How to avoid spring mold allergies

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

Spring has officially sprung in Huntington, and love is in the air.  Unfortunately, so is mold.  If you're one of the many people affected by mold allergies, here are some ways to stay safe and sane this spring:

  • Keep a pollen and spore tracker on your phone to alert you to allergen levels in your zip code
  • Take allergy medication or a face mask when going to places with high allergens, like greenhouses or antique stores
  • Avoid uncut fields and damp leaves, which are havens for mold
  • Wear a mask when mowing the lawn
  • Consider getting a dehumidifier
  • Keep your kitchen and bathroom clean, as warm damp places breed mold
  • Keep an eye on your basement
  • Make sure your air conditioner has a HEPA filter

Prevent Winter Mold

1/19/2018 (Permalink)

When people think of home damage that happens in winter, they typically think of house fires, or maybe flooding.  However, mold can also be a problem in the winter.

There are a few reasons for this.  Because your house is more closed off in the winter, everyday humidity from things such as showers, cooking, even breathing, can add up.  Normal winter hazards like rain, fog, and melting snow can seep through roof leaks and structural gaps, causing mold in places like your attic and wall voids.  Condensation dripping off pipes and windows into a heated home can also encourage mold growth.

Here are a few tips to prevent mold growth in your home in the winter:

  • Make sure your indoor humidity stays below 40%.
  • Vacuum and clean regularly, especially in humid areas like your bathroom and kitchen.
  • Make sure you have good air circulation in your home.
  • Don't store things such as books, paper, and clothes in a humid area like your basement.
  • Have your roof checked for defects and fix any that exist.
  • Insulate pipes to make sure they don't burst.
  • Find the source of any condensation on unusual places (pipes, windows) and fix it immediately.
