What to buy in August

7/26/2018 (Permalink)

After a bit of a hiatus, we've returned to our monthly installment of what to buy in each month.  Certain items go on sale seasonally, and August is no exception.  Here's what to stock up on:

  • Dorm supplies: Linens, storage containers, and small appliances go on sale just in time for school to start back
  • Craft supplies: It's not just college students!  Small kiddos often need craft supplies for school
  • Swing sets: Large stores are clearing out their summer selection of these and other outdoor play equipment
  • Swimsuits: Sadly, summer is almost over, and stores are clearing out their summer clothes to prepare for fall.

What to buy in April

4/11/2018 (Permalink)

April is already here and the weather is slowly warming up.  If you're looking for some deep discounts, here's what you should buy:

  • TVs and Home Theater Setups: Did you know Japan's fiscal year ends in March? Because of this, several brands of TVs and home theaters will go on sale to get ready for the new models
  • Athletic Shoes: Spring sales anticipate the upcoming nice weather.  Let's go for a run!
  • In season produce: You can munch on some asparagus, avocados, broccoli, and mushrooms
  • Thrift Store Goods: Donations usually spike in March and April (thanks, spring cleaning!) so now's the time to go thrifting

Spring clean your yard

3/19/2018 (Permalink)

Spring has sprung, and that means it's time for spring cleaning!  While you probably haven't thought about your yard in a few months, you'll be using it more in the upcoming warm weather.  Now's the time to start prepping:

  • Clean your yard of any debris: twigs, leaves, dog waste
  • Use last year's leaves and twigs for composting if you garden
  • If there's no more snow, pour some fertilizer and grass seeds on any bald spots in your yard
  • Change your oil and spark plugs in your lawn mower
  • Prune your trees and bushes
  • Prep plant beds if you're going to have a garden
  • Manage any gravel in your driveway or walkway
  • Patch and repaint your fence

Uncommon Spring Cleaning Tips

3/12/2018 (Permalink)

We all have our typical cleaning routines.  Some may be simple, some may be more complex. Whatever your cleaning checklist may be, there are probably some things you've missed.  Here are some less commonly cleaned items you may be missing:

  • Refrigerator coils: cleaning these can extend the life of your fridge and even lower your electricity bill!
  • Dishwasher: running a cycle with baking soda on the bottom and a cup of vinegar will make your dishwasher smell a lot nicer in the long run.
  • Toothbrush holder: You don't typically see the inside bottom of your toothbrush holder, and it can be a hotbed for mildew and mold.
  • Pillows: You may wash your sheets once a week, but it's also recommended to wash your pillows once every three months or so.
  • TV remotes:  Wipe down your remotes with a disinfectant wipe once a week
  • Phone: Same as the TV remote.  Your phone touches your hands and face almost constantly, picking up germs.
  • Trashcans: No wonder the trash smells so bad!  Small trashcans can be put in the dishwasher, but bigger ones will need a garden hose to wash out.

Recycling cell phones

2/9/2018 (Permalink)

With income tax refunds coming up, many folks out there may be upgrading their cellphones.  But what to do with the old phone?  Throwing away a cellphone in a traditional landfill is a no-go, as the battery can leech dangerous chemicals into the ground.  Here are some things you can do to get rid of your cellphone and keep the environment safe:

  • Cellphones for Soldiers: This charity gives cellphones to troops overseas so they can call their families.
  • Domestic violence shelters: many places that help women and children from abusive situations accept cell donations.
  • Recycling for Charities: This organization flips phones and gives the proceeds to a charity of your choosing.
  • ecoATM: this is a kiosk that recycles your phone and pays you for it in some cases.  There is one in the Route 60 Wal-Mart and another in the Barboursville Kroger.
  • Best Buy: If you're simply wishing to get rid of the thing, Best Buy recycles most electronics, including cell phones

Huntington Christmas tree recycling program

12/21/2017 (Permalink)

For those of us with real trees this Christmas season, it's important to dispose of it once the holiday season is over.  Dried out tree branches and needles can create a fire hazard.  The City of Huntington asks for you not to set trees out with your household garbage, as the sap can damage their trash collecting trucks and equipment.  So what can you do?

Luckily Huntington participates in a program to recycle old trees.  The trees get used by our WV park system to create habitats for fish in our lakes.  There are five free drop-off locations for the trees:

  • St. Cloud Commons (upper parking lot)
  • Harris Riverfront Park (upper parking lot on the 12th Street end)
  • Altizer Community Park
  • West end of the former Olympic Pool property
  • Deitz Hollow drop-off site. The times for this specific location are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month.

Recycling your Christmas tree is a benefit for the environment and for our state and national parks.
